Cream of the Crop – Outdoor Interactive Public Art Kaleidoscope

Where Sculpture, Stained Glass & Optical Wonder Come Together

“Public art you don’t just look at—you become part of it.”

The “Cream of the Crop” Outdoor Interactive Public Art Kaleidoscope is a one-of-a-kind sculptural kaleidoscope handmade by artist and kaleidoscope designer Karl Schilling of Kaleidoscopes To You.

Created primarily from found and repurposed objects, this large-scale interactive artwork invites children and adults alike to look, turn, explore, and experience the constantly changing patterns of a working kaleidoscope.

Designed for outdoor public spaces, sculpture parks, art parks, gardens, fairgrounds, community spaces, and other public-art installations, Cream of the Crop combines sculpture, stained glass, optics, mechanical ingenuity, and hands-on interaction into a piece meant to be experienced rather than simply viewed.

A Sculpture Built From North Iowa History

At the heart of Cream of the Crop is a wonderful piece of North Iowa agricultural history. The base of the sculpture is an old cream separator from a North Iowa farm, giving this artwork a direct connection to the farming heritage of the region.

Rather than allowing an old piece of farm equipment to simply fade into history, Karl has incorporated it into a completely new purpose—as the foundation of an interactive work of public art.

The result is a unique combination of North Iowa agricultural history, found-object sculpture, stained glass, mechanical engineering, and kaleidoscope optics.

Handcrafted Stained Glass Wheel

One of the focal points of the sculpture is its custom laser-cut steel wheel. Individual pieces of stained glass are incorporated into the steel wheel using the traditional copper foil technique made famous by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

As visitors turn the wheel, the stained glass passes through the kaleidoscope’s field of view, creating continually changing combinations of color, light, reflection, and symmetry.

Turn the Wheel and Become Part of the Art

To make the large stained-glass wheel easy and enjoyable for visitors to operate, Karl incorporated a vintage hand wheel connected to a gearing system and #40 roller chain.

Simply turning the vintage hand wheel transfers the motion through the gearing and chain system, allowing visitors to smoothly rotate the much larger stained-glass wheel.

This mechanical element is an important part of the sculpture itself. Visitors aren't simply pushing a button or activating an electronic motor—they are physically engaging with the artwork and experiencing the movement through an old-fashioned mechanical system.

Turn the wheel. Look through the viewing opening. Watch the patterns change.

You don't just look at this public art—you become part of it.

Weather-Resistant Removable Mirror System

Kaleidoscopes are traditionally designed for indoor environments, making the creation of a permanent outdoor kaleidoscope an unusual engineering challenge.

For this sculpture, Karl developed a separate mirror assembly housed inside durable PVC tubing. The mirror chamber is carefully sealed against rain and moisture using silicone sealant and additional weather-resistant clear coatings.

Because even high-quality outdoor sealants can eventually deteriorate after years of exposure to changing weather conditions, the mirror system has intentionally been designed to be removable and serviceable.

If a seal should eventually fail, the optical assembly can be removed for maintenance or replacement without requiring the entire sculpture to be rebuilt.

This practical design helps make the artwork suitable for long-term public installation while preserving its most important feature—the kaleidoscopic optical experience.

Key Features

  • Original Public Artwork: Individually designed and handmade by Karl Schilling.
  • North Iowa Farm Heritage: The sculpture’s base incorporates an old cream separator from a North Iowa farm.
  • Found & Repurposed Materials: Historic and found objects are transformed into functional interactive art.
  • Laser-Cut Steel Wheel: Provides the structural framework for the stained-glass elements.
  • Handcrafted Stained Glass: Glass is incorporated using the traditional copper foil technique.
  • Vintage Hand Wheel: Visitors turn a vintage hand wheel to operate the sculpture.
  • Mechanical Gearing & #40 Chain: Makes it easy to turn the large stained-glass wheel.
  • Interactive Kaleidoscope: Visitors physically operate the sculpture to create constantly changing patterns.
  • Outdoor-Adapted Optics: The mirror assembly is enclosed and sealed to help protect it from rain and moisture.
  • Serviceable Mirror System: The optical assembly can be removed for future inspection, maintenance, or replacement.
  • Family-Friendly Interactive Art: Kid tested and adult approved.
  • One-of-a-Kind: The use of found objects and handcrafted components gives each sculpture its own character and history.

About the Artist

Karl Schilling has been designing and building kaleidoscopes for 44 years. Cream of the Crop represents his fourth outdoor public-art kaleidoscope created during his career.

Karl earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls, with a background in glassblowing and fine art. His decades of kaleidoscope experience combine traditional craftsmanship, optical experimentation, glasswork, sculpture, mechanical design, and a lifelong fascination with reflected light and symmetry.

Perfect for Public & Outdoor Spaces

Cream of the Crop is especially suited for sculpture parks, public art programs, botanical gardens, community parks, fairgrounds, museums, children’s discovery areas, art centers, walking trails, and municipal public spaces.

Unlike sculpture that asks visitors only to observe, this artwork invites participation.

Turn the wheel. Look through the viewing opening. Discover something different with every turn.

Every visitor creates their own experience.

Why You Will Love It

Cream of the Crop brings together the scale and presence of outdoor sculpture with the intimate sense of discovery found inside a handmade kaleidoscope.

It connects North Iowa agricultural history with contemporary public art, giving an old farm implement a new life while introducing visitors to the magic of stained glass, mechanical movement, mirrors, light, and optical symmetry.

It encourages people to stop, interact, share the experience with others, and discover how simple materials can become extraordinary through light and reflection.

Public art you don’t just look at—you become part of it.

Outdoor Care & Maintenance

The optical system has been designed and sealed specifically to improve its resistance to outdoor weather. Because kaleidoscope mirrors and optics are inherently better suited to indoor environments, periodic inspection of seals is recommended for permanent outdoor installations.

The removable mirror assembly allows future servicing without substantially altering the sculpture.

Commission an Outdoor Interactive Kaleidoscope

Karl Schilling and Kaleidoscopes To You welcome inquiries from communities, sculpture parks, municipalities, arts organizations, businesses, and other groups interested in commissioning a unique outdoor interactive kaleidoscope.

Each sculpture can become its own landmark—combining public art, stained glass, optical science, recycled and repurposed materials, mechanical ingenuity, local history, and hands-on discovery in an experience designed for both children and adults.

Bring the wonder of a kaleidoscope into the landscape with an original outdoor interactive sculpture by Karl Schilling.
