Outdoor Interactive Kaleidoscope Art

Public Art You Don't Just Look At—You Become Part of It.

Welcome to the Outdoor Interactive Kaleidoscope Art Collection from Kaleidoscopes To You—a growing series of one-of-a-kind outdoor sculptures designed to bring the wonder of kaleidoscopes into public spaces.

These are not ordinary kaleidoscopes.

They are interactive works of public art, designed to be experienced by children, adults, families, and entire communities.

Every sculpture in this collection will be one of a kind.

Some will be original works created by artist and kaleidoscope designer Karl Schilling. Others will be commissioned specifically for a community, organization, business, park, sculpture garden, fairground, museum, or other public space.

Each sculpture can tell its own story.

A New Kind of Public Art

Traditional sculpture is often something we walk around and observe.

These sculptures invite you to participate.

Turn a wheel. Look through the viewing opening. Move the artwork. Watch light, color, glass, mirrors, and patterns transform before your eyes.

Every person who interacts with one becomes part of the experience.

Public art you don't just look at—you become part of it.

Every Sculpture Will Be One of a Kind

There will never be a mass-produced version of these outdoor kaleidoscopes.

Each sculpture can incorporate different materials, mechanical elements, stained glass, found objects, recycled materials, local history, artistic themes, and optical designs.

A commissioned sculpture can even be created to reflect the character and history of the community where it will be installed.

The goal is not simply to build an outdoor kaleidoscope.

The goal is to create a landmark.

Designed and Built With Decades of Kaleidoscope Experience

Artist and kaleidoscope designer Karl Schilling has been designing and building kaleidoscopes for more than four decades.

His background in fine art, glassblowing, sculpture, mechanical design, and optical experimentation comes together in these large-scale interactive works.

Outdoor kaleidoscopes present unique challenges because traditional kaleidoscope optics are normally designed for protected indoor environments. Karl continues to develop practical methods for protecting the optical systems from outdoor weather while making the systems serviceable for the future.

Commission a One-of-a-Kind Sculpture

Kaleidoscopes To You welcomes commissions for communities, organizations, businesses, municipalities, arts councils, public-art programs, and private properties interested in creating a truly unique outdoor interactive sculpture.

A commissioned piece can be designed around a location, theme, community history, local industry, natural environment, organization, or special story.

Materials and artistic elements can be selected specifically for the project.

The result is a sculpture that belongs to that place—and could never be duplicated somewhere else.

The Beginning of a Growing Series

Cream of the Crop is the fourth outdoor public-art kaleidoscope created by Karl Schilling during his 44-year career designing and building kaleidoscopes.

It also represents the beginning of a larger vision: creating a collection of one-of-a-kind interactive outdoor kaleidoscope sculptures, each with its own personality, history, materials, mechanical design, and optical experience.

Some may be created from found objects.

Some may incorporate historic materials.

Some may feature stained glass.

Some may celebrate a community or location.

And some will be commissioned and designed specifically for the people who will experience them.

But every one will have something in common:

They will be made to be experienced.

They will be made to be remembered.

And they will be one of a kind.

Bring Interactive Public Art to Your Community

If you are looking for a unique sculpture that encourages people to interact rather than simply observe, an outdoor interactive kaleidoscope offers an experience unlike traditional public art.

Turn the wheel. Look inside. Discover the unexpected.

Public art you don't just look at—you become part of it.
